Knowledge is losing its elitist character and is increasingly becoming common property; the global level of education is higher today than ever before. In particular, the interaction with the megatrend digitization is changing our knowledge of the world and the way we handle information. Thanks to the Internet, access to information and knowledge worldwide has become much better and fairer. With the help of artificial intelligence (AI), the enormous amounts of data, which are being collected in ever more granular and comprehensive ways, can be analyzed and filtered for relevant values. This development is fundamentally changing the way we deal with information as well as the way we impart knowledge. The more computing, thinking and research tasks are delegated to computers, the more indispensable intelligent machines become as assistance systems. The consequence is an enormous redistribution of knowledge and know-how. Digital, AI-supported learning is a future perspective that is particularly interesting for emerging markets, large territorial states and structurally weak regions without their own universities. The decoupling of teaching from time and place gives people access to higher education who would otherwise not be able to take up face-to-face studies due to their living conditions - such as people with physical disabilities, single parents or inhabitants of rural regions. A key aspect of the knowledge culture megatrend is lifelong learning.

The further expansion of the global knowledge society requires and offers enormous development opportunities for years to come. Firstly, investments in the digital infrastructure of countries bring more welfare and prosperity than in physical infrastructure. Decoupling will continue.
Secondly, public and private school and educational services will grow in the long run.
Thirdly, effective employee development becomes even more a critical competitive factor for companies and public organizations.
Achieving new educational goals from literacy to universal primary education requires high levels of investment in developing countries.
In terms of higher education, Europe and North America lead the way in terms of enrolment rates. Developing countries will catch up around 2035, but there will still be a significant gap with industrialised countries.
Only about 12% of today's top 500 universities are located in developing countries. A central challenge is therefore to improve the quality standards of the education systems in emerging economies, particularly in Africa and the Arab world.
The mismatch of talent between developed and developing countries will remain a major challenge. The fight for talent is manifested primarily in the need of developing countries to develop and retain talent, while developed regions need to attract talent from outside their borders.
The progressive development of the global knowledge society will accelerate the decline of the "old" world, i.e. the material-based economy. With increasing global knowledge generation and connectivity, smart companies will set up a system that combines knowledge from different areas in an efficient, up-to-date network. Openness to the knowledge of others, knowledge sharing and the creation of shared knowledge will become central goals for companies. Understanding the opportunities and weaknesses of foreign education systems is important to develop an international workforce and its benefits for companies. A corporate e-learning system optimizes professional qualifications. In addition, e-learning can be easily integrated into the daily routine of most working environments, so that additional training is available for more employees. In times of talent shortages and increasing globalization of the workforce, adapting their knowledge to the needs of the business is critical. Social networks, semantic web technologies and open innovation will play an important role in sharing and generating knowledge in the workplace.
